Surah Bani Israel (Children of Israel)
[aka. Al-Isra (the Ascension)]
Chapter 17: Verse 15

Translation:

He who follows the right way shall do so to his own advantage; and he who strays shall incur his own loss. No one shall carry another’s burden. And never shall We punish any until We send a Messenger.

Commentary:

It is obvious that if a man follows the right way, he does no favour to God, or His prophet (peace be upon him) or to those who seek to bring about reform. For his righteousness will be to his own advantage. Likewise, when he adopts a wrong course, or stubbornly clings to it, he harms no one but himself.

Once the truth is convincingly placed before a wise person, and falsehood is shown to be untrue, he should not allow his biases or excessive concern for material interests to deter him from following the truth and instead should adopt a straightforward attitude to it.

The statement ‘No one shall carry another’s burden’ emphasizes that every man has been encumbered with moral responsibility, that each person is accountable to God in his personal capacity, that no man has a co-sharer in this accountability. Hence, a wise person should not be overly concerned with the actions of others.

In the scheme of things relating to God’s Judgement of man, the Messengers occupy a central position. The Messengers constitute God’s evidence which, at the end of the day, also establishes man’s responsibility. For had not Messenger been sent and no Message conveyed, there would be little justification to hold men to account and to punish them.

Man’s responsibility is so grave that he ought to remain wholly absorbed with the question: ‘What will happen to me? How will God treat me?’ So far as others are concerned, God knows best as to how, when and to what extent His Message reached each of them, and how each of them responded to it, and why.

Removing Anxiety

Abu Saeed Al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that one day the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, entered the mosque and found a man from Ansar, named Abu Umamah. He said: "O Abu Umamah! Why do I see you sitting in the mosque outside the time of prayer?" Abu Umamah replied: "Anxieties and debts have remained with me." The Messenger of Allah asked: "Should I not teach you words, which if you say Allah will remove your anxiety and will settle your debt?" He replied: "Definitely, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Say when you wake up in the morning and when you reach the evening: 'O Allah! I seek Your protection from anxiety and sorrow, and I seek Your protection from helplessness and laziness, and I seek Your protection from cowardice and miserliness, and I seek Your protection from the burden of debts and from the tyranny of men." Abu Umamah said (later): "I did (as the Messenger of Allah said) and Allah removed my anxiety and settled my debt." Related by Abu Dawud.

Quotes to Ponder Upon

"Mark these five truths: an envious man finds no peace, a liar has no manly virtue, a greedy man is not to be trusted, a miser has no power, and a man of bad character has no glory."

9. If mom is not alive

If your mom is not alive, visit her relatives and friends and ask what you can do for them. Consider these two Hadiths (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him):

1. The Messenger of Allah said: When a person dies, his actions come to an end, except for three things: a continuing Sadaqa (charity), knowledge from which benefit is still being derived, and a righteous child who prays for her or him (translated meaning from Muslim).

2. Abu Usaid Saidi said: We were once sitting with Rasulullah when a man from the tribe of Salmah came and said to him: O Messenger of Allah! do my parents have rights over me even after they have died? And Rasulullah said:

Yes. You must pray to Allah to bless them with His Forgiveness and Mercy, fulfill the promises they made to anyone, and respect their relations and their friends (Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah).

10. Pick up her feet and spread the word

The Prophet Muhammad said: Your Heaven lies under the feet of your mother (Ahmad, Nasai). Ask your mom to lift her feet, so you can locate where Jannah is. Then tell others about your discovery by sharing what Islam has to say about moms and their importance in our lives.
